A growing and profitable Automotive Supplier in the Novi, Michigan area is in need of a 3rd Shift Toolmaker. This is a Full Time, Permanent, Direct Hire Position offering Competitive Compensation, Off Shift Premium, Good Benefits, Paid Holidays and Vacation.


The Skilled Trades Toolmaker ensures all plant and facility equipment associated with the successful fabrication of product is serviced and maintained in a timely manner. Responsible for troubleshooting systems; performing preventive and predictive maintenance on all installed equipment to minimize downtime, while keeping safety and quality as a priority; providing training and technical support to Assembly and Maintenance Team Members. The Toolmaker assists in production operations and supports Management, Area Leaders and Production Associates by acting as a liaison in matters regarding automation, safety and continuous improvement for equipment, processes and productivity.


• Journeyman Toolmaker, Jig / Fixture maker or Certified Post-Secondary Certification in a related field

• Minimum 5 years’ experience with Journeyman Card or Minimum 10 years’ experience.

• Extensive experience in Stamped and Welded Assemblies (Spot, MIG, Arc Braze, etc.) including related clamping, fixtures, and part fit-up

• Strong understanding of GD&T to enable data-driven assembly fixture adjustments.

• Ability to use hand tools to improve assembly tooling and fixtures to include cutting, adjusting, and shimming of existing tooling.

• Ability to Weld ARC / MIG / TIG

• Fixture tool design for continuous improvement activity

• Ability to reason through and identify root cause of assembly-related issues and derive creative solutions to new and existing design, clamping, fixtures, welding and robotic sealing and adhesive challenges.

• Proven ability to interact well with co-workers and promote the “Team” attitude.

• Ability to understand, anticipate and follow direction while exercising maturity of judgement.

• Ability to work well in a fast paced environment and with a variable workload

• Ability to work flexible hours in a fast-paced environment in order to meet customer requirements

• Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Must be able to interact effectively with other team members


• Service, maintain, repair, install and test new or existing equipment and verify conformance to specifications. (Robot / Welding / Fixtures)

• Complete repairs, modifications and installations as required.

• Provide plant support in troubleshooting of process problems and completes quality improvements as required to maintain part standards of quality. Establish cross functional team for reliability issues

• Deal extensively with production team and other support groups as well as vendors (both parts suppliers and equipment suppliers).

• Department support for testing, repairing and calibrating measurement components. Validates reliability issues with components and investigates repeat component failures.

• Carries out preventative/predictive maintenance procedures as laid out by the Company and the manufacturer’s specifications.

• Takes part in the continuous improvement process to improve productivity and quality (provides suggestions at team meetings, understands losses and gives ideas/solutions, participates in trials/experiments, volunteers on committee or focus group activities, etc.) cost reduction activities; repairs and systems improvements (optimization) and focuses on solutions. Documents improvements and analysis data, ensure swift and effective implementation.

• Analyse, record and chart documentation required for maintenance records and projects. Establishes benchmarks and shares improvement opportunities with department Shift Leader.

• Prepare drawings, material specifications to requisition as required by vendors or other departments.

• Support or conduct training for and implementation of cross-functional repairs to equipment that includes electrical, mechanical, tooling etc. provided that it can be done safely.

• Attends departmental and plant-wide communication meetings as scheduled.

• Attends training as scheduled.

• Complies with relevant Quality and Environmental programs (e.g. ISO / IATF-16949, ISO-14001).

• Complies with all Health and Safety programs in accordance with OSHA. Follows and ensures Company procedures regarding safety rules and regulations are followed.

• Conducts themselves in a professional manner and keeps work area clean and organized.
