Our client - a Tier 1 Automotive Supplier in Southfield - is looking for a Product Design Engineer.


The Product Designer will be based at our corporate office and will be responsible to design, develop, verify, and validate new product designs in order to satisfy customer, legal and internal requirements. The ideal candidate for this position is someone with self-confidence and have excellent communication skills to effectively communicate to the team. Preference will be given to those who have experience in the automotive industry, experience with CAD/CAM systems, the IATF 16949 International Standard, and be able to process simulations using Magma software.


  • Create visual sketches using CAD software CATIA and/or NX to create accurate and detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of product designs.
  • Verify and validate designs against customer packaging and mass requirements including generating, review, and/or maintaining documents that further define product design attributes.
  • Work to solve problems by proposing and developing solutions to problems that arise during product development.
  • Prepare and present periodic progress reports and develops an action plan to address identified issues.
  • Communicate progress with program managers and team members.
  • Help lead or participate in DFMEA development according to QS9000 requirements or equivalent.
  • Interact with customers and communicate CAD data and drawings to suppliers and customers.
  • Work to promote a safety policy that protects the health and safety of employees and the environment in which we operate by setting an example for all fellow workers to follow.
  • Utilize ABS principles when developing new projects and in day-to-day activities.
  • Complete periodic performance evaluations for direct reports.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or equivalent experience in the area of civil/structural, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience with at least 2 years in increasingly complex mold or product design.
  • Excellent hands-on in reading, understand engineering drawings, building geometries with CAD/CAM system (CATIA, NX) that meet process/product performance requirements.
  • Knowledge in structural analysis using FEA tools such as MSC-NASTRAN, ABAQUS, Altair Optistruct, and pre-/post-processors, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of IATF16949 system or equivalent.
  • Knowledge in process simulation using Magma software, or any other commercial packages such as PROCAST, Flow3D, DEFORM, and FIDAP.
  • Excellent understanding of the casting & forging processes.
  • Understanding of automotive customer and their requirements.
  • Effective team member and facilitator with good communication skills.
